You know that we love to make lists. For this upcoming holiday, we made you a list of our absolute favorite movies when it comes to interiors and settings. Spanish hacienda-style ranches, arty 90’s New York apartments, messy artist studios, and Italian villas. Pop your popcorn and bring your duvet to the couch. Here’s a list that won’t disappoint!
Four weddings and a funeral
Early 90s interiors and fashion at its best. If you are a fan of contemporary British style gurus like Laura Jackson and Lucy Williams, you will love this. Matching floral curtains and lampshades for the win!
Great expectations
The sets and costumes of the 1998 version with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke of this classic are just out of this world. The original novel by Charles Dickens takes place in London from 1812 to 1827. But the film instead takes place in 1990s New York. Mmm, every scene and space is made for an aesthetic eye, and you’ll find yourself daydreaming of the normal stuff: extravagant palaces, dreamy artist studios, and the perfect, luxurious yet arty New York apartment.
It’s complicated
We’d move into Meryl Streep’s Spanish hacienda-style ranch any day. Or even better, we’d love our parents to live like this and invite us for Sunday dinner every week. Another Nancy Meyer film, Something’s Gotta Give, is supposed to have started the Coastal Grandmother-trend*.
*A coastal grandma is an elegant older woman with a big Hamptons-style home decorated in white and beige.
Any film by Nora Ephron
Another director who’s known for her interiors is Nora Ephron. Hanging up, You got mail or When Harry met Sally, have your pic… They are all full of the coziest interiors you can imagine.
North by Northwest
That Alfred Hitchcock was a set designer in his youth makes sense – more stylish movies are hard to find. This blockbuster is packed with stunning 50s interiors and architecture. We especially enjoy all the public spaces like restaurants, the train, and the iconic UN building in New York.
Notting hill
Even though his house is very messy for most of the film, you can’t help but fall in love with Hugh Grant’s simple 90’s bohemian interior. It must be the reason everyone craved Thonet café chairs and everything rattan in the early 2000s. We still do.
Call me by your name
If we’re being honest, the villa in this movie steals the show. Although there is an intense forbidden love story in there too. And even though Timothée Chalamet is cute, we’re drooling even more over his turquoise bathroom. Not to mention all the breakfast settings and never-ending wine lunches on perfect tablecloths.
The Royal Tenenbaums
There are numerous movies where the adult main character returns to their childhood home. A home where everything, including their teenage rooms, is still intact. A very nostalgic idea that is less common in reality. Of all the childhood homes we’d like to return to, the Royal Tenenbaums New York townhouse is at the top of our list. A closet full of board games from floor to ceiling has always been a life goal.
Pride and Prejudice
This is one of our favorite stories of all time. In the movie with Kiera Knightley from 2005, one house, in particular, caught our eye; the cottage Charlotte Lucas and Mr. Collins live in is just perfection when it comes to being British cottage core. In these kinds of period films, it’s usually the servants‘ quarters, kitchens, or less fancy homes that are most inspiring, don’t you think?
Parallel Mothers
If you are into colorful, modernistic, and a bit kitschy interiors, you should type Almodóvar in your search. In the movie Parallel Mothers, huge parts of the story take place in the apartment of Penelope Cruz’s character, Janis. Her decor is, of course, very Almodóvarian. Mint green walls and bright red cabinets never looked better! Also, the shapes of every detail are like music to our ears. But to our eyes. You get it!
